This session is the third of the termly Science subject leader update meetings, which will take place across the year.
Over the year we will be looking at:
- Science Audits & Deep Dives: carrying out Science Audits to help schools identify their strengths and areas for development.
- Preparing schools for a Science Deep Dive, including: questions leaders, teachers, and pupils may be asked and evidence Ofsted may be looking for based on my previous 2 Ofsted deep dives in the last 2 years. As the year develops, we will explore the new Ofsted framework and expectations around curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment.
- Curriculum Development: supporting the development of a clear, progressive science curriculum that builds: Knowledge over time (sequencing and progression) and skills, particularly those linked to “working scientifically.”
- Ensuring prior knowledge and retrieval are explicitly planned for: strengthening memory and learning and using retrieval practice strategies effectively in science lessons.
- Leading Science Effectively by developing confident, knowledgeable Science Subject Leaders: understanding the role and responsibilities; monitoring and evaluating science provision and raising the profile of science in the school.
- Teaching & Learning in Science: looking at how to make science exciting and engaging through practical, hands-on experiments, real-life contexts and enquiry-based, child-led learning approaches.
- Embedding Environmental Education by supporting schools to: integrate topics like climate change, biodiversity, and sustainability meaningfully.
Samuel Johnson is a member of SLT, KS2 Phase leader, ICT leader and Science leader at Our Lady of Lourdes Wanstead Primary School, in the London borough of Redbridge. He is responsible for the Science curriculum throughout EYFS, KS1 and KS2. He has been integral in the development of skills and curriculum design for his school in all subject areas and has created a whole school approach which has been implemented by all subjects. Samuel currently teaches a year 6 class but also has experience in a range of other year groups, including secondary.
