This second session builds on the launch of the English Network professional development series. It has been specifically designed in response to the Writing Framework and ongoing curriculum review, providing English leaders with clear guidance to support the raising of standards in writing. Closely aligned with the inaugural session and subsequent English Network sessions scheduled throughout the year, this session ensures coherence and sustained professional learning.

This session, and the network as a whole, will provide an overview of evidence-informed approaches to improving teaching and learning in English, including:

  • Writing Framework alignment: Practical guidance on the new DfE Writing Framework, exploring what this looks like in practice through curriculum design, teaching sequences, and assessment.

  • The power of transcription: An exploration of how handwriting, spelling, and sentence structure underpin writing success, and why early mastery is crucial.

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS): Clarification of what the new guidance means for GPS teaching, alongside practical strategies for embedding grammar within writing to support fluency and quality.

  • Curriculum review: An update on ongoing curriculum review activity and guidance on how schools can future-proof their English curriculum and planning.

  • Impact of the new Inspection Framework on English leaders: Analysis of current Ofsted expectations and their implications for English leadership under the new inspection framework.

  • Professional collaboration: Opportunities for leaders to share high-leverage practice and learn from peers across the network.

The session will be led by Keely Adams, an experienced assistant headteacher and English leader. Keely has held responsibility for the English curriculum across KS1 and KS2 in multiple schools. She has also worked as a school improvement leader, supporting the development of teaching and learning across all subjects, and as an English advisor for the local authority, where she supported schools in strengthening both the leadership and delivery of English
